Breaking The Taboo of the Period Blues: PMS, PMDD, and Mental Health
You’re invited to “Breaking The Taboo of the Period Blues: PMS, PMDD, and Mental Health” with Kelsie Bonaparte, macros social worker and health and wellness specialist, and Dr. Jennifer Okwerekwu, reproductive psychiatrist and integrative women’s mental health specialist.
If you are a menstruating person or know someone who is, you may have heard of premenstrual syndrome (a.k.a. PMS). But have you also heard of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), the much more severe form of PMS? These are two health conditions with extreme emotional and psychological symptoms that negatively impact many people’s lives.
Due to the continuing taboos around talking about menstrual health, reproductive health, and mental health, many people keep their experiences of PMS and PMDD quiet. And for Black women, even when they do share what they’re going through, stereotypes related to race and gender often undermine the challenges they face while dealing with the conditions. Add the fact that institutions aren’t funding enough research on their impact on Black women, and that Black women are being under-diagnosed and under-treated, and it’s clear that we all need to take these conditions more seriously.
Join us on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 for a community conversation that provides both lived experience and medical perspective on PMS and PMDD and validates their specific impact on Black women.
Let’s break the taboo of the period blues as we work towards relief for all🩸😮💨
