You’re invited to “Breaking Cycles, Building Legacies of Joy: Parenting Strategies for Emotionally Healthy Children” with Dr. Tamique Ridgard, Licensed Psychologist, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, and Assistant Professor of School Psychology at the Fordham University Graduate School of Education.

Truth be told, being a parent can be one of the most challenging human experiences. Not only do the systems we live under make it difficult to parent children in healthy and safe environments (a core value of reproductive justice), but most people aren’t taught how to raise children in ways that meet their relational and emotional needs. Plus, many parents have childhood trauma they still need to process and heal. Add balancing traditional expectations of parenting with desires to raise children differently, and it’s no wonder parenting is hard!

So then, what does it look like to nurture emotional intelligence and self-regulation in children and not pass on intergenerational trauma? How might adults see children’s behaviors as valid responses to unmet needs or as potential for skills development, rather than perceiving children as being “manipulative” or giving “attitude”? And given a cultural legacy of enforcing obedience and “tough love” because it’s dangerous for Black children to not be compliant in this world, how can Black parents foster their children’s agency and curiosity instead?

Join us on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 for a community conversation that explores parenting strategies that contribute to emotional health and healing for both parents and kids.

We’re giving parents grace, holding them accountable, and uplifting healthy connection for the whole fam 🫂
