Sooner Rather Than Later: Tracking Preventive Screening and Health Tests for Black Women
You’re invited to “Sooner Rather than Later: Tracking Preventive Screening and Health Tests for Black Women” with Dr. Jay-Sheree Allen, Preventive Medicine Fellow at the Mayo Clinic and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Black women face an increased risk of developing a number of health conditions, due to structural factors like racism and sexism. Yet as a group, they are given less preventive screening and follow up care than other populations. While there are valid concerns about the potential negative impact of screening too frequently, this is an alarming health inequity. Something needs to change when Black women are being screened too late for certain chronic illnesses.
In this community conversation, we’ll discuss the preventive screening and health tests Black women should be getting throughout their lives and how screening guidelines need to reflect the reality of Black women’s lived experiences.
We deserve to receive care at a stage when it’s preventive rather than diagnostic. Let’s create our own checklists so that we can stay ahead of medical concerns while there is still a chance to improve our outcomes. ✅
